Everything you need to know about microwave po...

I like popcorn.  (Seriously, who doesn’t?)  But I’m a bit of a snob.  I don’t really like the smell of microwave popcorn, it kind of lingers all day with its fake buttery, chemically smell.  So, I’m a purist.  I buy the bag of kernels, pull out a pot, add some oil, and make popcorn on the stove.  Well, only occasionally, because I’m a little heavy-handed with oil, so it’s not really a diet food.  And, oh yes, there’s an oily pot to clean.   So, one day I discovered …

Microwave poporn!

Huh, you might say?  Stick with me, I’m not crazy!  I discovered that you don’t have to BUY microwave popcorn to MAKE microwave popcorn.  Here’s the secret…a brown paper bag (like a school sack lunch) and popcorn kernels.  It’s magic!  Not really, it’s scientific, but this isn’t a book, so if you’re interested in a lesson, go visit Alton Brown‘s site.

I take about a 1/4 cup of kernels and put them in the bag.  Fold the top over a few times and put it in the microwave for about 2 minutes.  (In my experience.  You might want to keep an ear out for when the popping slows down.)   This makes about 3 cups.

I’ve been experimenting with flavors; chili and powdered lime; cinnamon and Splenda; and of course, salty and buttery!  Sigh, unfortunately my buttery is all chemically with a fake-butter spray, but I’m sure my hips will appreciate it some day, won’t they?

I’ve been looking around for some new flavors and found these…
