Not a Resurface

road work_1As I was on my way to Bible study Tuesday morning I got stuck on Dogwood Trail.  They are resurfacing the entire stretch of road and so it becomes a one-lane where you have to wait in a line for the oncoming traffic to pass and then the man with the sign turns the STOP sign to SLOW.  You’re then permitted to proceed.  I didn’t know that Dogwood Trail needed a facelift.  It seemed OK to me.  No potholes or rough places but the powers-that-be must have seen something I didn’t.

Resurfacing.  Paving over the original.  Makes me think of the work that Jesus accomplished.  Stay with me here.  Jesus didn’t die a brutal death and conquer the grave to cover our sin or make us better.  It wasn’t just to resurface it or put something over it so it’s not seen.  He actually cut a new road “Therefore if any man is in Christ, he is a new creature; the old things passed away; behold, new things have come.” (2 Cor. 5:17)  The old things are gone (unless we bring them back).  In fact, they’re gone as far as the east is from the west. (Ps. 103:12) Never to be remembered again by God.  There is a new road, a new journey in Christ, not the old one that’s just patched up or resurfaced.

So next time you’re in a line of traffic awaiting your turn to go on the one-way lane remember this:  You were not resurfaced!  You were made new.  It might help talk you down from the frenzy we get in when we have to wait anywhere much less at road resurfacing.
