Makes Me Think of . . . My Eternal Inheritance

They’re rocks. Really. Just rocks, I know, but when my stepfather told me that my mother, who is having trouble remembering things, lost all of her diamond rings it made me sad. Really sad cause that’s probably the only tangible thing that I’ll have from my parents; diamonds that my dad had given my mother 56 years ago when they were married. There were 3 rings in all. Gone. I was actually looking forward to giving them to my daughters. Their inheritance. My inheritance. Gone. Oh, well. Just rocks.
Makes me think of . . .
. . . my eternal inheritance. While my earthly inheritance might be lost I still have an inheritance. The great thing about this other inheritance is that it will never be lost, misplaced, stolen or forgotten. That’s great news for us aging baby boomers! This belongs to all of us who have chosen to follow Christ. It’s the same as a will that has been executed promising future wealth. It might not be realized right now but you are sure it’s coming. It’s the will of Jesus Christ. However, this will is not just any will. Christ secured forgiveness and power over sin to be realized now!
Acts 26:18 – ‘to open their eyes, in order to turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan to God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins and an inheritance among those who are sanctified by faith in Me.’
Here’s the most beautiful verse about our eternal inheritance. This is how to KNOW that it cannot be lost, misplaced, stolen or forgotten.
I Peter 1:3-5 – Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, Who according to His great mercy has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, to obtain an inheritance which is imperishable and undefiled and will not fade away, reserved in heaven for you, who are protected by the power of God through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.
This is so much better than rocks. And if that weren’t enough God has given us His Holy Spirit as a pledge of our inheritance! There’s no way we can loose!!
Ephesians 1:13-14 – In Him, you also, after listening to the message of truth, the gospel of your salvation – having also believed, you were sealed in Him with the Holy Spirit of promise, Who is given as a pledge of our inheritance, with a view to the redemption of God’s own possession, to the praise of His glory.
I’m very thankful that I at least have one inheritance that I can count on. Here’s my prayer for you . . .
I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened, so that you may know what is the hope of His calling, what are the riches of the glory of His inheritance in the saints, and what is the surpassing greatness of His power toward us who believe. –Ephesians 1:18-19a
